Hello Gardener,

Welcome to Emerald Gardens Newsletter

Record drought not only weakens plants, It also allows Spider Mites to multiple and spread to huge numbers on host plants. Soon the host plants that naturally withstand the assault are overwhelmed and the mites begin to spread quickly to many other types of plants. Natural hosts are most evergreens such as cypress, cedars, junipers and large tropical leafed plants. This year there is an epidemic of spider mites spreading to Texas Sage, Rosemary and many otherwise resistant plants.
Rainfall is very disruptive to mite reproduction and spread. Look for dusty gray foliage on evergreens (they look pale and dusted with very fine debris), Small irregular webbing from branch tip to tip is a dead giveaway (spider webbing is uniform and has symmetry) but is always a sign of severe infestation. Disrupt mites with daily vigorous sprays of water for the most natural control. This will not get ride of mites it just limits their damage. Neem oil and Organocide are effective controls as well as most oil sprays. Be careful of oil spray in full sun and on sensitive plants.
Spider Mites are too small to see and be easily over looked when a plant looses vigor.

Heat loving perennials
Can be desert plants or tropical plants that are well adapted to our winters. Thryallis is a newer addition to the list. Just as Yellow Bells and Plumbago, Rain of gold has proven to be winter hardy, deer resistant and well adapted to poor soil. Another deceptively hardy tropical plant is the Duranta or Brazilian Sky Flower. Duranta has dark green jagged leaves and an upright habit to 6'. In the summer it is covered with small blue flowers on spikes that are followed by bright orange berries. Even after this severe winter most specimens are well up from the root zone and will be 4' by year end.

Night blooming tropical waterlilies
Are coming up Strong and will have blooms by month end.
We have mostly a pink flower variety with a nice copper/ mahogany color leaf.
These will open their blooms at dusk and stay open till about 11: the next morning.
NB lilies are late to come up each spring and should always be given time to sprout. Very warm water is needed for growth and summer heat causes them to explode in bloom frequently with 2-3 or more blooms open every night.
NB lilies seem to glow at night  to attract night pollinating insects.
Very hardy these tropicals will come up every year with multiple plants and will need to be thinned for best growth and bloom size.
Before they start blooming get your night bloomer for just $20, Regular $40

Tadpoles and Snails  We have a great selection of bullfrog and Japanese trapdoor snails fresh from the supplier.
Snails are effective at algae control and general pond cleanliness. Large snails are $2.49. Just a few will grow in numbers.
Bull frog tadpoles ($1.99)  are fun to watch and can take months to develop into frogs.
Large growing frogs are great for organic insect control. As they grow they consume huge numbers of bugs from mosquitos to grasshoppers.
Frogs are part of and encourage a strong natural ecosystem. Frogs will grow in size each year until they are about 6 inches long or more. After a year or so the frogs will sexually mature and begin to reproduce. Large unwanted tadpoles are easy to catch and are worth store credit.
