Hello Gardener,

Welcome to Emerald Gardens Newsletter
Night Blooming Waterlilies
Tropical Waterlilies are among nature's largest flowers and Nightblooming Lilies are the biggest of all. The giant Victoria lily is the biggest nightbloomer, but very tropical in nature and not suited for Austin ponds.
More Hardy varieties over winter every year in Austin and produce many offspring each year as they sprout in March or April. These lilies grow fast and can be 6 feet across in just a couple of months. Blooms start as soon as it gets over 95 degrees and don't stop until late in the fall or winter. Colors availible are white, shades of pink and rose. Leaf color varies from lime green to very dark mahogany.
Leaves are boldly veined and very stout with sharply serrated margins.
These qualities make nightbloomers a Showy addition to any large pond.

    Patio citrus:  Meyers Lemon
Gardeners get great pleasure from the fruits of their labors and producing a few of your own fruit can be the most rewarding. Any one can grow a sweet/tart and easy to care for Meyers Lemon. In Austin Lemons should be Kept in a large pot of about 30 gallon size or larger with a good grade of potting mix, topdress with slo-release fertilizer and use a good acid forming fertilizer for deep greening such as Carl Pool Acid or Miracid. Flowering early in the spring usually Feb or March means the blooms might have to be protected in an actual freeze.
However Meyers Lemons can tolerate temperatures well below freezing with just a light grow cover for protection. We recommend moving yours into a sheltered area only if the lows are to be below 25 deg. Lemons Ripen in the late fall around Thanksgiving time for a taste of sunshine on a wintery day.
 Dragonfies:
Natures Mosquito eater. Young and old alike are drawn to the aerial Beauty and Bright colors of Dragonfies. We Texans have the best Oding chances (watching Dragonflies) as 225 of the know 457 types are located in Texas. Dragonflies are ancient and have been around since before the dinosaurs, Proving Their hardiness thru time. Dragonflies differ from Damselflies by their wings being outstretched and not clasped tightly above their back when at rest. They are voracious feeders and will consume thousands of mosquitoes and flies in their short 4-5 month adult life. However the Larvae under water can take up to 5 years to develop all the while consuming countless mosquito larvae as well as other aquatic bugs and sometimes fish.
Build it and they will come, any small pond is the source of food and reproduction for dragonflies and they will show up the first summer water is in your garden helping to create a naturally insect free yard.

Clump Forming Bamboo:
Fast Screening and easily controlled
Clumping Bamboo Hardy enough for the Austin area is limited to a few varieties of the family Bambusa which all grow as large clumps rather than running spreading types.
Many clumping bamboo are to winter tender for our area and some are commonly sold here and then lost when we really freeze. Common examples are some of the timber bamboo and weeping bamboo. The best varieties for Austin having proven themselves in containers and inground are hardy to the middle teens and all grow very fast. Alphonse Karr is a 15 to 20 foot tall selection that has beautiful gold and green striped canes. Golden Goddess is ferny leafed and grows about 8-12' tall with a bit of a weep and smaller golden canes. Weaver bamboo could be one of the hardiest tall growing varieties growing over 30 feet tall and having a very clean refined foxtail like growth on 1.5 inch diameter canes. All three varieties will be evergreen and grow almost year round with fertilizer and water. Full height is reached in just a few years and spread can be controlled with a simple snip to any unwanted new canes. One of Austin's best tall screen choices and a deer resistant tropical look.
