Hello Gardener,
Welcome to Emerald Gardens Newsletter
Violas
Winter color can be some of the brightest of the year with many different shades of varying color. Snapdragons, Dianthus, Alyssum, Pansies and Violas are all great for winter blooms and cold tolerance. Violas stand out with many varied hues of color subtlety changing through Pinks, Purples, Blues, Lavenders, Yellows, Oranges, Whites , Reds and just as many bi-colors and two-tones.
With a smaller bloom size you get a far larger flower count and faster re-bloom. Violas tend to stay tighter and make a bushier clump, very well suited for containers. Use close to walks and entries so guests can admire the small faces and intricate colors. Blood meal is an excellent fertilizer for winter plants and doubles as a fairly effective deer repellent. Work in about 2-3 pounds per 100 square foot and watch you Violas go. Combine in containers with Sweet Allysum and tall Dianthus or Snaps.
Nolina Bear grass
Nolina is a family of desert grasses similar to yuccas but with out the sharper spines and with a softer leaf.
Nolina Texana is our local type and can be seen billowing over limestone banks and bluffs and road embankments. It requires excellent drainage but is very hardy and easy to grow looking like an evergreen flowing grass. Nolina Microcarpa is native to Arizona and is more upright and has a wider leaf. Nolina Lindheimeriana is larger growing type that is also more upright and wider leaf
Nolina Nelsoni is a blueish version that is more vertical than the others and looks like a yucca.
It is the most showy and makes a great specimen eventually forming a trunk to 10' or more. All these bear grasses are in stock and start very well during the winter. Bear grass can tolerate some shade if very well drained making it one of the most cold hardy dry loving yucca like plants you can plant in a semi shade garden. Terraced hillside beds work very well for a mixture of Nolinas , Yuccas and Agaves. Using a mixture of specimens from diffrent families gives many varied leaf forms and flowers over the summer season and provides a hardy evergreen landscape throught the winter.
Low water desert plants and native perennials will fill in the gaps and give lots of color.
